The Digital Port of Entry Project
Connects young people to career exploration at US Ports of Entry.
The Digital Port of Entry Initiative integrates STEM career exploration with highly collaborative teacher training to create a successful program, of STEM-focused, Project Based Learning activities for Teachers and students, that form a regional STEM Workforce Development approach, to serve middle and high school students in traditionally under-served communities and the teachers who served them.the Digital Port of Entry Initiative provides an expanded vocabulary of the sciences by way of examining jobs and work functions, found at a US Port of Entry.

Built on a gamification, easy-to-complete, set of standards aligned STEM activities,
students work with content, industry mentors and virtual & real field trips to learn what to think about and how to think critically about decisions (e.g. like shipping freight by rail or truck, what makes a crane move, how to solve a crime with incomplete evidence) Students complete an online set of these activities that examine a port industry from the inside. We believe in this approach because STEM is uniquely suited to student-driven learning, collaborative work, and experimentation, we expect to see STEM learning take the lead in strengthening meta-cognitive and social-emotional skills.
Student Participation
Students are directly connected to, what we call ‘industry career touch points’ (interviews with young people currently employed in the industry, meetup groups, field trips, internships, commercial certification, etc) to support the content and help develop the skills and motivation students need to absorb the value of science, math and experiential learning. DPOE provides a continuous pipeline of
opportunities students will need to be successful and be ready to compete in today’s economy.

Hands On
DPOE prepares k12 students for careers in Port related industries by providing STEM based activities and experiential learning opportunities. Students enjoy a stimulating, collaborative environment of online and in-person mentors, exciting and interactive activities that motivate students to participate. Activity examples include, training and education in trade and logistics, aviation, cyber security, coding and engineering
building-construction trades.

Teachers and community educators in the Digital Port of Entry RatchetUp! professional development modules. Here, teachers learn to implement programs with a STEM foundation, into traditional lesson plan of all subjects. Teachers, particularly from under-served communities and nontraditional education settings, use our standards based  content to deliver developmentally appropriate, project based teaching to kids who need it most. The RatchetUp! Professional Development modules were first introduced in 2015, over a 2 year engagement with Santa Clara county office of Education, to embed STEM practices into classes with children with disabilities.
Each of the RatchetUp!  Modules included:
  • Professional development facilitation
  • Instructional hands on STEM activities
  • A research component involving extensive data collection efforts. This included use of the DORS Classroom Observation tool - focusing teachers on agreed-upon best practice and universal design linguistics (UDL)  principles
  • Externships for teachers inside of some of America's top tech companies.
